Boko Haram Ambush Claims Lives of Lieutenant Colonel and Six Soldiers in Borno State
In a tragic incident along the Biu-Buni Yadi road in Borno state, Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly carried out a deadly ambush resulting in the death of a Lieutenant Colonel and six soldiers. The attack took place at Kamuya, a village near Buratai, the hometown of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd), as the soldiers were en route to Damaturu to purchase fuel.
According to sources cited by Daily Trust, the victims were part of the 135 Special Force Battalion Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Buratai. The ambush led to the loss of an officer, a driver, a gunner, and four other escorts, while several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
A security source expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “It’s very sad; they were soldiers of 135 Special Force BN FOB in Buratai. They were ambushed on their way to Damaturu, Yobe state, to buy fuel. Unfortunately, we lost an officer, a driver, gunner and four other escorts, while the wounded are in the hospital responding to treatment.”
An eyewitness who narrowly escaped the attack described the overwhelming gun battle that took place, emphasizing the insurgents’ numerical advantage over the soldiers. The survivor attributed their escape to divine intervention, highlighting the intensity of the confrontation.
In the wake of this tragic event, some Nigerians are calling for accountability within the Nigerian Army, citing instances of alleged excessive force used in a recent operation in Delta State. Concerns have been raised regarding the military’s response to community crises and the need for a thorough review of tactics and strategies to prevent further loss of lives.
The nation mourns the loss of these brave soldiers and stands in solidarity with their families and colleagues during this difficult time. The sacrifices made by these dedicated servicemen in the fight against terrorism will not be forgotten, and efforts to ensure the safety and security of all citizens must be redoubled in the face of ongoing threats posed by insurgent groups like Boko Haram.
