Why I Didn’t Build Any New School As Anambra Governor — Peter Obi

Clement Olafusi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has finally responded to the claim that he did not start and complete any school as the governor of Anambra state.

Whilst speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a press conference, Obi stated that he improved the educational system in Anambra during his reign as the governor.

A former presidential aide and social media influencer, Reno Omokri, had  said Obi did not build a single school while he was Anambra governor.

Omokri challenged obidients (supporters of Peter Obi) to name one school built by Obi and get a reward of $10,000.

“I am giving a challenge. I will give any (Obidient) $10,000 if they can name one school that Peter Obi started, completed and commissioned while he was governor of Anambra state,” Omokri had said.

Obi was the governor of Anambra on three different occasions from 2006 to March 2014 as a result of lengthy legal issues.

In a press conference on Wednesday,  a journalist asked the former governor to react to the claim that he did not build any school in Anambra during his tenure.

Obi responded by saying many people do not take time to read the manifestos of candidates running for elective positions.

He explained that when he was campaigning for the Anambra governorship, he made a promise to change the educational system in the state.

He gave an account of how the ranking of Anambra in terms of education improved during his administration.

“When I was campaigning for governor. I hope you are aware, that for two years, schools were shut in Anambra. Anambra school system was very low in rating,” he said.

“I said I will change the educational system in Anambra state, where schools would never be closed. I would make sure I gave the best to education.

“We had an issue with male children not going to schools. I said I will revive that and make sure that Anambra state becomes one of the best.

“When I started, we were number 26 and 26 on WAEC and NECO. By the time I left, we were number one.

“When I was the governor, I knew the state of the school. Every secondary school had a borehole, computers, vehicles and generators. No other state in this country was able to do that.”

“I believe that I did the right thing, those who are looking for the wrong thing… when I promised the people, I delivered.”
