The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified his priorities amid discussions of a potential merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in an interview on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV, released on YouTube on Saturday, the former Anambra State governor emphasized his desire to see Nigeria flourish rather than his own political ambitions.

“I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential,” Obi stated, reflecting his commitment to national progress over personal gain.

Addressing the possibility of a merger between LP and PDP, Obi expressed his appreciation for PDP stalwart Atiku Abubakar’s supportive remarks.

Atiku had previously indicated his willingness to back Obi if the presidential ticket were to go to the South East.

“I commend him and I’m grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if it (the presidential ticket) goes to the South East,” Obi said.

Obi also highlighted the purpose behind the merger discussions, underscoring that any such alliance should be focused on effective governance and unlocking Nigeria’s potential.

“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it,” he concluded.
