Joe Igbokwe, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticized activist Aisha Yesufu for what he describes as “nonsensical behaviour” in response to her perceived disrespect towards the newly reinstated national anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee.”

Yesufu, co-convener of the advocacy group BringBackOurGirls, made the decision to stay seated and use her phone during the national anthem at a recent event.

She brought attention to this decision by sharing a video on X, formerly Twitter, with the description, “Not my national anthem.”

Igbokwe, responding on Facebook, accused Yesufu of harming her own and her family’s reputation with her actions.

“Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behavior will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue,” he posted.

President Bola Tinubu’s National Anthem Bill 2024, which reinstates the old national anthem, has sparked mixed public reactions, especially amid Nigerians’ current economic struggles.
