Former Kaduna Lawmaker, Shehu Sani, on Monday called on President Bola Tinubu to release all #EndSARS protesters who remain in detention.

Sani emphasized that the release of these detainees would honor the spirit of June 12, a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the ex-lawmaker drew a parallel between the ongoing detentions and the June 12 struggle, a reference to the pro-democracy movement of the early 1990s.

“In the spirit of the June 12 struggle which we fought 30 years ago, I call on the President to release all persons still held in the Nigerian Prisons because of the #EndSARS protest,” Sani wrote.

The #EndSARS movement, which erupted in 2020, saw Nigerian youths taking to the streets to protest against police brutality and broader socio-economic issues in the country.

The protests were marked by significant unrest, including attacks on police stations, formations, and officers.

While many protesters were subsequently released, a number of individuals are still believed to be detained across various police stations and prisons in Nigeria.

By invoking the legacy of June 12, Sani aims to remind President Tinubu of the importance of upholding democratic values and human rights.
