Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has emphasized that his team must persist in their quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their recent setback against Benin Republic.

The former African champions suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their matchday four encounter held in Abidjan on Monday night.

This unexpected loss leaves the Super Eagles in a precarious position, as they currently sit fifth on the Group C table with only three points from four matches.

Despite the discouraging result, Finidi George is urging his players to remain resolute and not abandon their World Cup aspirations at this critical juncture. He expressed his belief in the team’s potential to turn their fortunes around through dedication and hard work.

“There’s no special formula to win; we have to see how the players will start a new season now and see how we can get the best out of the players,” Finidi stated. “Everybody must be committed and I believe with commitment we will win games. I believe we are going to win games and if we can win games, the battle will still be there.”

“We can’t throw in the towel because we’ve had only three points, we have to find a way to get these players back in a way for them to perform,” he added.

As the Super Eagles look ahead to their next matches, the focus will be on rebuilding confidence and securing the vital points needed to climb up the Group C standings.
