Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer and socio-political activist, expressed his concern over the increasing food prices in Nigeria on Sunday.

Adeyanju highlighted the escalating cost of basic food items, particularly pointing out that a small basket of tomatoes now costs as much as N25,000.

Criticizing Bola Tinubu’s government, he argued its priorities prioritize luxuries like a private jet for the president, while many Nigerians struggle to afford essential food items.

He underscored the gravity of the situation by noting that the price of tomatoes symbolizes the broader economic challenges and inequalities that ordinary Nigerians are facing.

This concern comes at a time when food inflation in Nigeria reached an alarming 40.66 percent in May 2024, exacerbating the financial strain on households across the nation. The rising costs are severely impacting the ability of many Nigerians to meet their basic needs.

In a post on X, Adeyanju lamented the state of the nation’s economy, stating: “Nigeria is sinking before our very eyes as citizens can barely afford to buy food but all Tinubu, Akpabio and the evil ruling elite in the country care about is buying a new private jet for the president. The tiny basket of tomatoes is N25k.”
