Atletico Madrid has announced the extension of César Azpilicueta’s contract, keeping the veteran defender with the club until 2025.

The 34-year-old Spaniard joined Atletico last summer from Chelsea on an initial one-year deal, which included an option for an additional year.

Since his arrival, Azpilicueta has been a key player for Atletico, regularly featuring in the first team.

The club’s statement confirmed that “César Azpilicueta has agreed to a one-season extension of his contract with our club.”

“The 34-year-old footballer from Navarra will therefore keep on wearing our colours next campaign after the 34 games played last season in which he performed in both the centre-back and at right-back, thus making a full display of his all-round versatility.”

Azpilicueta’s impressive career includes eleven seasons at Chelsea, where he served as captain and won every available club competition. His experience and leadership quickly established him as a cornerstone in Atletico’s dressing room, making him one of the most admired players by fans.

“His experience and hierarchy soon made him a fundamental cornerstone in the dressing room, as well as one of the most popular and admired players by our faithful that will keep on enjoying his football for one more season,” the club added.

Chelsea sanctioned Azpilicueta’s departure last summer, a year before his contract was due to expire, in recognition of his 11 years of dedicated service.

During his time with the west London club, Azpilicueta won every major trophy available in club football, solidifying his legacy as one of Chelsea’s greats.

Atletico Madrid fans can look forward to another season of Azpilicueta’s dedication and versatility, as he continues to contribute to the team’s successes on and off the pitch. The club concluded their statement with a congratulatory note: “Congratulations, Cesar!”
