Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, has warned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that the 2027 senatorial election should be based on the FCT’s residents’ decision.

Wike, had previously challenged Senator Ireti Kingibe, who currently represents the FCT, vowing to ensure she would not return to the Senate in the next election cycle.

This challenge came after Kingibe criticized Wike’s performance, highlighting the lack of essential amenities such as schools, hospitals, and potable water in the FCT.

Responding to Wike’s comments on social media platform X, Adeyanju clarified that the FCT is distinct from Rivers State, where Wike accused election results of manipulation and violence.

FCT is not Rivers, where people write results and shoot guns. Even incumbent presidents get defeated in the FCT,” Adeyanju stated.

He further criticized what he described as an overconfidence in electoral manipulation mechanisms, asserting that such arrogance was uncalled for.

“I know these folks have 100% control of INEC and other rigging mechanisms, but the arrogance is truly uncalled for.”

Adeyanju also likened Nigerian politicians to celebrities and pastors who abuse power, claiming they boast openly about their ability to misuse police authority.

Nigerian politicians are like power-drunk Nigerian celebrities and pastors who can boast openly about getting the police to lock you up, and they will eventually do it,” he said.
