Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor of Ekiti State, has pledged to implement effective governance measures to curb the continuous migration of Nigerian youths to economically viable states.

Speaking on Wednesday at an interactive session titled ‘Youths Let’s Talk With BAO,’ held at the Adetiloye Hall, Trade Fair Complex in Ado Ekiti, the governor emphasized the importance of fostering a positive mental perception about Nigeria among the youth.

Governor Oyebanji highlighted the economic dangers of the ‘Japa syndrome,’ a term used to describe the exodus of young Nigerians seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

He warned that this brain drain could jeopardize the country’s growth if left unchecked.

During the event, the Ekiti Youth Parliament, an assembly of elected youths from the state’s 16 local government areas, passed a vote of confidence in Oyebanji’s leadership.

They praised his administration for securing their future and providing inspiring leadership.

Addressing over 1,000 youths from across the state, Oyebanji stressed that efforts would be made to ensure Ekiti becomes an attractive place for young people to live and conduct their businesses.

“This is a democracy; we can’t stop anybody from traveling to wherever they like, but we have a duty to create an enabling environment to stop the Japa syndrome,” he said.

“Japa is not just about traveling abroad; you can leave Ekiti and travel to Lagos or other states.

“We will work hard to make Ekiti a place where people can work and live, where investment can thrive, security is guaranteed, and businesses can flourish. It’s about providing jobs for a large population of our youths.”

Addressing recent incidents of violence in Ado Ekiti, the governor urged youths to reject cultism, drug abuse, and senseless killings.

He warned that viewing Nigeria as a failed state could be detrimental to their future.

Oyebanji also outlined plans to enhance food security in Ekiti.

He promised to resolve transportation issues faced by youth farmers in the Ipao-Oke Ako-Irele axis, ensuring their agricultural efforts are not adversely affected.

Encouraging unity among youth groups, the governor assured that his administration would not politicize its programs and would accommodate all citizens regardless of political affiliations.

Olusanya noted that youths make up 70 percent of the voter demographic in the state. “The youths of Ekiti are convinced that our future is guaranteed under your leadership. Ekiti people love you, and it is evident in the way they celebrate you always. We have discussed and concluded that you deserve a vote of confidence, and we are endorsing you for a second term because you have made us proud,” he said.

“We are grateful for all you have done. We know our future is safe in your hands. You have demonstrated capacity and shown that you love Ekiti youths.

Hundreds of youths have been appointed as Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants under your leadership. We are grateful to you” Olusanya concluded.
