Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, expressed disappointment with England’s key players following their 2-1 Euro 2024 defeat to Spain.

In a post on X, Carragher stated that the Three Lions’ top performers “didn’t turn up” for the tournament.

Spain clinched the title with a late winner from Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored after coming off the bench. Cole Palmer had earlier equalized for England, following Nico Williams’ second-half goal for Spain.

In the aftermath of the loss, calls for England manager Gareth Southgate to step down grew louder.

However, Carragher defended Southgate, emphasizing that the blame does not always lie with the manager.

“Sven played 442, Fabio was too strict, Gareth is too defensive! Funny how it’s always on the manager isn’t it?!!” Carragher remarked. He added, “The fact is our big players didn’t turn up in this tournament. And other tournaments going back years.”
