Joey Barton, a former England player, believes that Greenwood’s absence was the primary factor in England’s Euro 2024 cup defeat.
Greenwood is expected to sign a contract with Marseille in Ligue 1 after spending the previous season on loan at La Liga team Getafe.
The 22-year-old player will be permanently leaving Manchester United.
The move will see him sign a five-year contract with the French club, marking a significant shift in his career trajectory.
Barton, who himself spent several years playing for Marseille, praised Greenwood’s transfer, highlighting the young player’s potential and resilience.
In a post on X, Barton wrote, “That is a great signing. The kid deserves a chance to get on with his career. We all make mistakes. Nobody’s perfect. England would have won the Euro’s with this kid in the side.”
Greenwood’s career faced a significant setback when he was accused of sexual harassment, a case from which he was later acquitted after key witnesses withdrew.
Despite this, the public fallout and subsequent scrutiny have impacted his performance.
Barton acknowledged this, stating, “He’s a good player, as any in that Euro’s squad. His behaviour and the public fallout have massively affected his performance, yet he went to an average team in Spain and got himself back on track.”
