Dele Momodu, a prominent journalist and former presidential candidate, has voiced serious concerns about Nigeria’s economic situation
Addressing President Bola Tinubu, Momodu highlighted the critical issues facing the nation and urged immediate action to rectify the situation.
The letter, titled “Urgent Message for President Tinubu,” was shared on social media and begins with Momodu explaining his motivation as a concerned friend and brother.
Momodu, despite being an opposition member, emphasized his shared history with Tinubu and his duty to uphold the truth.
“I owe you only one thing, TRUTH. It is very obvious that the first thing that takes flight in the Presidential villa is TRUTH. The reason is simple. Some Nigerians are experts in hijacking men and women of power. The deification process is often swift and irreversible. I’m writing you today, not because I expect you to act on my suggestions, but to put it on record that someone gave you the true picture of things,” Momodu wrote.
Momodu declared that Nigeria is in serious trouble, with the economy virtually collapsed.
He criticized Tinubu’s administration for excessive spending at a time when frugality is essential.
“Purchasing Presidential jets, building outlandish monuments, distributing cash as palliatives, etc., are signs of a failed and careless government,” he asserted.
He urged Tinubu to curb excessive spending to free up resources for meaningful development.
Momodu suggested that Tinubu’s desire for a second term might be driving the misuse of resources.
He emphasized that the best way to secure a second term is through performance, not extravagance.
“Nigerians are not expecting you to turn water into wine but they don’t want you to turn their wines into water,” he noted.
Momodu recommended investing in vocational skills, local agriculture, and educational institutions instead of distributing cash to politicians.
He warned Tinubu to be wary of those in the National Assembly who indulge in hero-worship.
He pointed out that Senator Ali Ndume, who has been critical yet constructive, is a valuable ally. “NDUME is your best friend. Listen to him. There’s danger ahead,” he advised.
Momodu called on Tinubu to enforce discipline within his administration, specifically mentioning Nyesom Wike, who had publicly disrespected the President in a recent matter.
