The minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said President Bola Tinubu did not campaign for the presidency as a “magician”.
Whilst speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, the minister said the Tinubu-led administration cannot solve a “100-year-old problem” in one year.
He added that the federal government is “doing well when you look at certain indices” hence, he is not worried about the capacity of the current administration to resolve Nigeria’s problems.
“When you judge the government based on the ability of this particular administration to solve a 100-year-old problem in one year, you might be having such assertion,” he said.
“Mr President, to the best of my knowledge, never campaigned to be a magician. He campaigned as a statesman. He campaigned on the basis of renewed hope.
“Before a hope can be renewed, it means it has dwindled. When you want to reinvigorate a hope that has really gone down, when you want to reprocess a system that is down, you need a bit of time. Within this time, are we on the right step? Yes.”
Tunji-Ojo also said Nigeria’s problems can be ascribed to years of mismanagement, saying that it is easier to destroy than to build.
A youth-led nationwide protest over the widespread economic hardship in the country has been scheduled for August 1-10.
