Former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor has called on his old club to make a bold move in the ongoing summer transfer window by signing Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.
The 29-year-old England international has reportedly fallen out of favor under new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca and could be seeking a fresh start elsewhere.
Agbonlahor, speaking to talkSPORT, expressed his belief that Sterling remains an exceptional talent and would thrive under the guidance of Aston Villa’s current manager, Unai Emery.
“Raheem Sterling is 29. We are not talking about someone in their mid-thirties,” Agbonlahor said, highlighting the player’s prime age and potential impact on the team.
Reflecting on Sterling’s recent form, Agbonlahor pointed out that the winger was in great form at the start of last season, even prompting discussions about his potential recall to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
However, Chelsea’s turbulent season, where players struggled to find consistency, saw Sterling’s influence wane.
“Chelsea were a shambles last season,” Agbonlahor stated. “Players were not given the games to prove themselves. It was a poor season for the majority of Chelsea players.”
Agbonlahor believes that under the right management, Sterling could rediscover his best form, and he sees Unai Emery as the ideal coach to help him do so.
“If it’s right and the club want to do it, why wouldn’t Aston Villa fans be on side? Because he is an outstanding player when he is being coached right by a top coach like Unai Emery – I’m sure he will get the best out of him.”
