Sven-Goran Eriksson, the former manager of England’s national football team, has passed away at the age of 76.
Eriksson’s family confirmed his death on Monday, issuing a brief statement that read, “Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away. After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family.”
The Swedish football icon had been battling pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis he revealed at the beginning of 2024, sharing that he had been given just a year to live “at best.”
Eriksson’s managerial career was marked by his successful stints at some of Europe’s top football clubs. His career highlights include managing teams such as Benfica, AS Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Lazio.
He gained widespread recognition for his tactical acumen and ability to turn teams into formidable opponents on the pitch.
Beyond club football, Eriksson’s tenure as England manager from 2001 to 2006 was notable, as he led the national team through three major tournaments. His influence on the game left an indelible mark, both in England and across the football world.
