The primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Henry Ndukuba, has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a new constitution to bolster Nigeria’s democracy.
He made this call on Thursday at the 19th standing committee meeting of the church, at St Andrew’s Basilica, Nike Diocese in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu state.
The priest emphasized the need for a new constitution that reflects recommendations from previous national conferences and responds to present calls for restructuring.
Ndukuba warned that ignoring the call for constitutional reform would be “postponing doomsday,” as Nigeria continues to contend with numerous unresolved problems.
He also said that the adoption of a new constitution will tackle the root causes of the “xenophobic agitation of the citizens”.
According to the primate, a fresh constitution would address the “xenophobic agitation of citizens.”
The priest also commended the national assembly for their efforts to amend the existing “military-bequeathed constitution”.
“The National Assembly has done well in setting the stage for a new constitution by the sovereign assembly of the people of Nigeria,” he said.
