Former Nigerian Senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed deep condolences over the tragic killing of three members of a SuperSport crew by suspected kidnappers on the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, as the crew was en route to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya.
The match, which was eventually played on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, was overshadowed by the loss of these professionals, who were on assignment to broadcast the event.
Reacting via his X handle, Sani described the incident as “a national tragedy” and called for urgent action by security forces to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The killing of the three @SuperSportTV crew on assignment to Uyo, South South Nigeria for the @afcon2025 is a national tragedy,” Sani tweeted. “The Anambra bandits have wasted the precious lives of a dedicated and passionate sports crew. All hands must be on deck by our security forces to bring these criminals to justice.”
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and urged Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, to immortalize the victims in recognition of their dedication to sports broadcasting.
“My condolences to their families and the SuperSport team. I call on the Sports Minister @OwanEnoh to immortalise the deceased. May their souls rest in peace. Ameen,” the post concluded.
The tragic loss has sent shockwaves across the sports community and highlighted the growing insecurity challenges in parts of Nigeria.
