Former England international Paul Gascoigne has suggested that legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson should return to Manchester United for one more season to help revive the club’s fortunes.
Gascoigne shared his thoughts during an interview with SportsCasting, expressing sympathy for current manager Erik ten Hag, who has faced increasing pressure following United’s poor performances this season.
“Looking at Ten Hag, I feel sorry for him a bit,” Gascoigne said. “I would love Alex Ferguson to take over just for one season and see what he could do with those players because I think some of them take the p*** out of Ten Hag.”
Manchester United, currently struggling for form, is in need of stability as Ten Hag faces mounting criticism. When asked if he thought Ten Hag would still be in charge by Christmas, Gascoigne pointed out how difficult it has been for previous managers to fill Ferguson’s shoes.
“To follow Alex Ferguson, a few of them, even Jose Mourinho didn’t last long, David Moyes not for long,” Gascoigne remarked. “It’s like me as a player – I knew I was good, and it didn’t matter who I replaced. But it’s been tough for anyone coming after Ferguson.”
Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired in 2013 after a highly successful 26-year tenure at Old Trafford, has since stayed involved with the club in an advisory role.
However, Gascoigne’s suggestion reflects growing frustration among fans and pundits over the club’s current trajectory under Ten Hag.
