Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, has urged government officials to ensure sustainable livelihoods for citizens to prevent tragedies like the recent tanker explosion in Jigawa State.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi described the explosion as a national tragedy, expressing his condolences to the victims and pledging to donate funds to assist those affected.
The explosion, which claimed the lives of over 180 people and left more than 80 others hospitalized, has left the Jigawa community in mourning.
Obi extended his sympathies to the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Umar Namadi Dan Modi, and the people of Jigawa, emphasizing the need for urgent action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The frequency of tragedies in the nation has become a concerning issue that calls for special supplications for God’s intervention,” Obi stated.
He further urged government authorities to implement necessary infrastructure and safety laws to mitigate the risks of such disasters.
According to him, these tragedies often occur due to the absence of proactive measures that could have averted the misfortune.
Reflecting on the impact of the explosion, Obi noted that many of the victims were young people in their prime productive years.
“This is a national tragedy. I pray for the departed souls and strength for their bereaved families,” he said.
In addition to offering his prayers, Obi pledged to provide financial support to the victims and commended the efforts of the Jigawa State government to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
He also called on tanker drivers to exercise caution while transporting fuel to avoid further accidents.
