Swiss midfielder Silvan Wallner has announced his retirement from professional football, stating his intention to dedicate his life to following Jesus Christ.
Wallner, who began his career with FC Zurich in 2020, has amassed over 100 appearances across three clubs—Zurich, Wil, and BW Linz.
He joined the Austrian side BW Linz in September on a two-year contract, but has now decided to step away from the sport entirely.
In a statement released by Blau-Weiß Linz, Wallner explained his decision: “I’m a devout Christian, and I read the Bible. I make my own decisions about my life. I wish to follow Jesus Christ, and the biblical day of rest has become important to me. This means that I no longer want to play professionally on Saturdays.”
Wallner emphasized that this was a personal conviction rather than a decision influenced by external factors.
He clarified that although he is not currently a member of any church, his faith has guided him to this life-changing choice.
“This is my personal conviction,” Wallner said. “I say a big thank you to people who have accompanied and supported me in my sporting career.”
The young midfielder’s decision comes as a shock to many, given his recent involvement with the Swiss U21 national team. Wallner’s most recent appearance for the U21s came just two months ago in a 1-2 defeat to Albania in early September.
Known for his disciplined play and tactical awareness, Wallner’s retirement is a rare instance of a young, promising talent stepping away from the game for religious reasons. His decision has sparked conversation in both the football community and beyond, highlighting the role of faith in shaping athletes’ personal lives and career choices.
While Wallner’s playing days are now behind him, it is clear that his faith will remain at the forefront of his journey. Fans and supporters have expressed their respect for his decision, acknowledging the courage it takes to follow one’s beliefs so steadfastly.
