The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has announced the reappointment of Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term.
The decision, made by consensus, was confirmed by the WTO’s General Council in a statement on Friday.
The reappointment, which takes effect on September 1, 2025, extends Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure for another four years. The WTO highlighted her exceptional leadership and strategic vision as key factors influencing the decision.
The reappointment process began on October 8, 2024, and was overseen by Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council.
With no other nominations submitted by the November 8 deadline, Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the sole candidate. The process adhered strictly to the WTO’s “Procedures for the Appointment of Directors-General” (WT/L/509), ensuring transparency and inclusivity.
During a special General Council meeting held on November 28-29, 2024, Okonjo-Iweala presented her forward-looking vision for the organization. Following a detailed Q&A session with members, the Council unanimously endorsed her reappointment.
“The General Council commends Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for her outstanding leadership during her first term.
Amid significant global economic challenges, she strengthened the WTO’s ability to support its members and set a forward-looking agenda for the organization,” the Council noted in its statement.
The Council also praised her pivotal role in achieving meaningful outcomes at critical moments, including the WTO’s 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences (MC12 and MC13).
Okonjo-Iweala first assumed office on March 1, 2021, making history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO. Her first term, marked by significant milestones, concludes on August 31, 2025.
