David Moyes has cast doubt on Chelsea’s ability to challenge Premier League frontrunners Arsenal and Liverpool this season, despite acknowledging the impressive strides made under their current manager.
Speaking in a recent interview, the West Ham boss praised Chelsea’s handling of their sizable squad but expressed skepticism about their ability to reach the levels of their fiercest rivals.
“I’m not too sure that they [Chelsea] can compete with Arsenal, certainly with Liverpool at the moment,” Moyes remarked.
“But I think it’s a great credit to the manager, because it was a group of players generally, which looked very big.”
Chelsea, who have shown signs of resurgence after a rocky start to the season, have been managing a large pool of players effectively across domestic and European competitions.
Moyes highlighted this as a key factor in the team’s recent performances.
“I think he’s been able to use these players in Europe, in the European games, and also in the league, which has helped him keep the players happy just now,” he said.
The former Manchester United and Everton manager emphasized the importance of squad harmony as Chelsea navigate a busy schedule.
“As long as he can keep that group of players happy, then I think they’ll continue to do well,” Moyes concluded.
While Chelsea’s form has improved, the gap in consistency compared to title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool remains a concern.
The Blues currently sit outside the top four, making every upcoming fixture crucial if they are to challenge for a Champions League spot.
