Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed optimism about the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, Kalu revealed ongoing high-level discussions with authorities to secure Kanu’s freedom.
“I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” Kalu said.
The forum, led by Kingsley Ikoro, Ebonyi State House Majority Leader, also discussed regional issues.
Kalu urged lawmakers to support the proposed South East Development Commission (SEDC) and constitutional amendments set for public hearings next year.
He stressed the importance of unity, calling for an end to sit-at-home protests that harm the region. “Unity is power. We need to come together for growth and development,” he said.
Kanu has been in the Department of State Services’ custody since 2021 after his arrest in Kenya.
Recent assurances from Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu suggest President Bola Tinubu may soon approve Kanu’s release.
