Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has warned that ministers who refuse to honour invitations extended by the National Assembly have no place in the government of President Bola Tinubu.
Akpabio made the statement on Wednesday during a joint session of the National Assembly, where President Tinubu presented the 2025 budget proposal of N47.9 trillion.
The Senate President emphasized the importance of the National Assembly as a symbol of democracy and underscored that ministers who ignore its invitations are not true democrats.
“These ministers should know that every invitation from the National Assembly is constitutional,” Akpabio stated.
“We also have constitutional powers to take further action when they refuse to appear. Mr. President may wish to caution some of the ministers who disrespect this hallowed chamber.”
Akpabio added, “Those who disregard invitations from the National Assembly are not democrats and, therefore, have no place in your government.”
The Senate President also expressed disappointment over the loud criticisms of Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, particularly from those who do not fully understand the bills.
Akpabio called on Nigerians to engage thoughtfully with the proposed reforms, describing them as the first comprehensive tax overhaul since Nigeria’s independence.
“This initiative presents a transformative opportunity for rejuvenating small and medium enterprises and enhancing the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.
“These reforms will not only improve Nigeria’s revenue profile but also create a more conducive and internationally competitive business environment, supporting sustainable development.”
Akpabio further assured that the 2025 budget would be considered and passed “swiftly,” signaling the Senate’s commitment to facilitating the country’s progress.
