Chelsea captain Reece James took a significant step in his recovery on Friday by returning to first-team training after more than a month on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.
The 25-year-old defender hasn’t played since the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on November 10, but his return brings much-needed hope to a squad dealing with multiple injuries in their defensive line.
James participated in part of the training session as Chelsea carefully manage his rehabilitation.
The club is determined to avoid rushing his recovery, prioritizing a gradual build-up to ensure long-term fitness. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca provided an update on the skipper’s progress, stating:
“Reece will finally start with us for part of the session. Slowly, slowly… he will be back. It doesn’t mean he’s going to be with us on Sunday, or next Sunday. The plan today is for part of the session. We’ll build the right conditions for him, then finally he can be back with us.”
Chelsea, currently grappling with defensive injuries, are without Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana until January at the earliest.
Additionally, Romeo Lavia remains doubtful for Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash against Everton.
Despite James’ encouraging progress, he is not expected to feature in match-day squads until after the New Year as the club maintains a cautious approach to his fitness.
