Anambra State police have confirmed that 22 people lost their lives in a stampede in Okija, a community in Ihiala Local Government Area.
The victims had gathered to receive bags of rice donated by the Obijackson Foundation, a philanthropic initiative founded by prominent entrepreneur Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson.
Chaos erupted during the distribution, causing a stampede that led to the tragic loss of lives. The exact cause of the unrest remains unclear, but investigations are underway.
State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, visited the hospital where the victims were taken, verifying the death toll and assessing the situation. While the total number of injured individuals has not been disclosed, the police assured the public that support is being provided to those affected.
In his statement, Mr. Ikenga expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
“The Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ndi Anambra, with a focus on crime prevention, responding to emergencies, protecting vulnerable populations, and fostering a sense of community security,” the statement read.
