Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, has criticized Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his comments on recent tragedies in Anambra and Oyo States.
Dare, via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, accused Obi of exploiting the unfortunate incidents for political gain, describing his remarks as lacking “statesmanship and decency.”
He accused Obi of seeking to capitalize on the misfortune of others, a behavior the Yoruba people refer to as ‘Aríje nínú Màdàrú’ – thriving on confusion and calamity.
Dare expressed disappointment over Obi’s attempt to score political points amid tragedy, pointing out that such actions only serve to undermine genuine leadership.
He contrasted Obi’s remarks with the compassionate response of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who swiftly cancelled engagements, expressed heartfelt condolences, and ordered an immediate investigation into the tragic incidents.
“True leaders rise above politics in times of tragedy,” Dare said, emphasizing that the President’s response exemplified a commitment to leadership and national solidarity.
The tragedies in Anambra and Oyo have sparked nationwide concern, highlighting urgent issues in crowd management, public safety, and the need for effective governance.
The government, Dare assured, recognizes its responsibility in these matters and is working tirelessly to address the root causes.
The administration is particularly focused on improving economic conditions, ensuring a safe environment, and enhancing the standard of living for every Nigerian.
However, Dare underscored the shared responsibility between the government and citizens in addressing these challenges.
He stressed the importance of patience, orderliness, and adherence to proper permits for public events, which are crucial for preventing avoidable tragedies in the future.
Despite the current challenges, Dare remained optimistic about the ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration.
He assured Nigerians that these efforts would soon bear fruit, with transformative changes in the pipeline, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope agenda for a brighter, more prosperous future for the country.
