Former Senator Shehu Sani has shed light on the challenges state lawmakers face when opposing bills submitted by their governors, revealing the far-reaching control governors wield over state assemblies.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, disclosed in a recent post on X that rejecting an executive bill could result in dire consequences for lawmakers.
“Members of States Houses of Assembly can never reject an executive Bill from their state Governors or else the speaker will be impeached, and if you are a member too critical of the Governor, you may earn suspension,” Sani stated. “This is the case in most of the states since 1999.”
Sani also accused governors of dominating local politics, often reducing state assemblies to mere rubber stamps and rendering local governments ineffective.
