Former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned the United States for its focus on military spending abroad while neglecting its own domestic problems.
In a statement on X on Sunday, Sani described the U.S. as a powerful nation that struggles to address its internal challenges, despite its vast financial resources.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in Nigeria’s Senate, criticized the U.S. for spending trillions of dollars on wars across the globe while its citizens continue to face poverty and other socio-economic issues.
“America has a lot of money to use for other things around the world, but most times doesn’t have enough money to take care of its domestic problems,” Sani stated.
The former senator also pointed out the vulnerabilities of the U.S., particularly during natural disasters such as floods, fires, and pandemics, which he argued expose the country’s weaknesses.
“Whenever disasters like floods, fires, pandemics, or hurricanes happen, the vulnerability and weaknesses of the great country become more apparent,” Sani added.
Sani also addressed the issue of gun violence and rising crime rates in the U.S., noting that despite these challenges, the country continues to fund wars abroad.
He criticized this allocation of resources, saying, “Trillions for funding wars abroad while the country grapples with the problems of gun violence, poverty, and crime is not wise.”
The statement comes in the context of growing domestic discontent, which Sani believes was reflected in the election of former President Donald Trump.
Trump, who has been outspoken about reducing military spending overseas, defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Sani noted that Trump’s campaign resonated with many Americans who are frustrated with the country’s foreign interventionist policies.
“The people of America have their strong reasons for voting for their Trump, who pointed this out during the campaigns,” Sani added
