Nigerian Afrobeats singer Spyro has opened up about the challenges of publicly proclaiming Jesus Christ in the music industry.
In a recent interview with Echo Room, the artist, who is widely recognized for his hit songs, revealed how his faith has impacted his career.
Spyro, known for his “Jesus boy” brand, shared that being outspoken about his Christian faith has led to discrimination and a lack of support from key industry players.
According to him, media moguls and influential figures in the industry have largely ignored his work, despite his success.
“My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination. I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand, and I’ve received the biggest criticisms,” he said.
The artist expressed his frustration, stating that even though he pays for blog promotions, he rarely receives organic support from major media platforms.
“If you want to be truthful to yourself, how many media moguls support or post me when I drop songs? You see them posting other artists, but aside from the blogs that I paid to post me, how many media moguls post me? Sometimes, I ask myself why, because people who are not doing as well as I am, they post them,” Spyro lamented.
He explained that this treatment is part of a larger issue for artists who openly declare their Christian faith. Spyro cited a conversation with popular R&B star-turned-pastor Banky W, who told him that his problems in the industry began after he publicly proclaimed Christ.
“Banky W told me that his problem started in the industry the moment he proclaimed Christ.
He told me to be sure that I am ready for this. He said when he was a ‘bad boy,’ everything was going well, but immediately he decided to do it in a godly way, war started,” Spyro recounted.
The singer further described the entertainment industry as a system designed to challenge artists who openly identify with Christianity.
Despite the challenges, Spyro remains steadfast in his faith, insisting that his decision to proclaim Christ is one he is fully committed to.
