The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed deep grief over the death of one of its officers, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was killed during a midnight raid in Anambra State.
Salisu was allegedly shot by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, while performing his duties.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 19, the EFCC condemned the “irresponsible and inhuman” narratives circulating on social media regarding the incident.
The Commission described these narratives as “outrageous” and emphasized that the tragic death of a patriotic officer should not be reduced to social media drama.
According to the EFCC, the operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday, January 17, at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close in Ifite, Awka.
Salisu and his team had arrested 37 suspected internet fraudsters in a two-story building, including Ikechukwu, whose apartment was monitored via a CCTV camera.
Despite identifying themselves and requesting access, Ikechukwu allegedly fired shots at the investigators, killing Salisu and injuring another officer.
The EFCC stated that preliminary investigations confirmed Ikechukwu’s involvement in internet fraud, coding, and suspicious online medical supplies.
Items recovered from his apartment include laptops, iPads, and other recording devices. The suspect is currently in police custody and will face trial for murder and other related crimes.
In its statement, the EFCC raised concerns about the increasing threat posed by internet fraudsters, highlighting that many are now armed and involved in violent crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings.
“These criminals are no longer just ‘Yahoo boys’; their activities are becoming patently hazardous to public safety and security,” the Commission warned.
The EFCC vowed to pursue justice for its slain officer and warned that any future attacks on its personnel would be met with the full force of the law.
The Commission also expressed appreciation for the condolences and support it has received from law enforcement agencies and members of the public during this challenging time.
