Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after serving part of her prison sentence in the United Kingdom for involvement in an organ harvesting scandal.
Sources close to the family confirmed that Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, January 20, 2025.
The development, which has garnered significant attention, follows a landmark legal case in the UK.
In May 2022, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a third individual, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted for trafficking a young man from Nigeria to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his organs.
The UK court sentenced Senator Ekweremadu to 10 years in prison, while his wife received a 6-year sentence.
Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria comes as a moment of relief and celebration for many in Enugu State, her home region.
The news has been met with prayers and calls for the safe return of her husband, who is still incarcerated in the UK.
Supporters of the Ekweremadu family have expressed optimism that the former deputy Senate president will soon be reunited with his loved ones.
