Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed his intention to retire as a secondary school teacher in Onitsha to inspire young students.
Obi made this statement on Friday while engaging with final-year students of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, as part of activities marking the International Day of Education.
Addressing the students, Obi emphasized the importance of education as a key driver of success.
“Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the most important capital, the equipment you need to be successful. That you are here is a sign that you’re already on the path to success,” he said.
He recounted a personal experience from 1970 when he, as a young student, welcomed then-Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to the school.
He noted that through education, he later had the privilege of sitting at the same table with Gowon to make national decisions.
Obi also acknowledged the school’s rich history, highlighting that its centenary celebration was approaching.
“I was just passing by when I decided to mark the International Day of Education with you. I also know that tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of this school, so I came to be with you.”
Reiterating his commitment to education, Obi revealed his plans for the future.
“I hope to retire to Onitsha someday and take up a teaching job to inspire children,” he stated.
