The Lagos State House of Assembly has implemented stricter security measures requiring all officials to present valid identity cards to access the premises, a move aimed at enhancing control and safety.
This directive comes in the wake of the controversial impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa earlier this month.
A notice issued on Monday, January 27, and signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, informed staff and legislative aides that they must present valid identification to enter the Assembly complex.
The notice emphasized that access would be denied to anyone without proper credentials.
Ottun also reassured staff that the Lagos State Police Command had pledged to maintain order at the Assembly despite the ongoing political events.
“The police have confirmed their commitment to ensuring security and smooth operations at the Assembly,” Ottun stated.
This announcement follows the impeachment of Speaker Obasa on January 13, 2025, following allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.
The majority of House members voted in favor of his removal, and his position was subsequently taken over by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa, however, publicly declared on January 25 that he remains the legitimate speaker, asserting that due process must be fully followed.
He has not attended the last two plenary sessions, and his absence has continued to stir discussions as the House continues its legislative work under the new leadership.
