A Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has sentenced 19-year-old Dahiru Usman to one month in a correctional facility after being found guilty of assaulting a sex worker.
The court also offered Usman an option to pay a fine of N7,000 or face a 12-month jail term if he fails to comply.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the incident occurred on January 15 when the accused, Dahiru Usman, and the victim, Zainab Idris, agreed to meet at a hotel located on Constitution Road for a paid service, at a rate of N10,000.
However, an argument ensued between them, which escalated into violence. Usman reportedly struck Idris with a hammer on the head, causing her injuries.
The prosecutor, ASP Luka Sadau, presented the hammer recovered from the scene as evidence and urged the court to impose a strict penalty on the accused.
He also requested that Usman be ordered to pay N70,000 in compensation to the victim.
Usman pleaded guilty to the charges of assault and causing harm, and the court handed down the sentence, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable for such offenses.
The judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, expressed hope that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to others.
