The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that adversaries of the Igbo people are taking advantage of his incarceration to orchestrate attacks on communities in the Southeast.

Kanu expressed his concerns during a routine meeting with his legal team, led by his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

He maintained that such attacks would not have occurred if he were free, suggesting that his presence had previously served as a deterrent.

Ejimakor shared details of their discussion in a statement on X, emphasizing Kanu’s belief that his continued detention has emboldened aggressors.

“UPDATE: During our visitation with Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu yesterday, he lamented that enemies of the Igbo race have taken advantage of his illegal detention to unleash coordinated attacks on defenseless villagers.

“Had he been a free man, no entity would have dared carry out such an audacious attack against peaceful farming communities in Igbo land. Gbuo dike, gbuo dike, ihe ike ruo achowa dike is an Igbo adage and it’s apt at this time,” Ejimakor stated.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in 2021, continues to face trial on charges related to alleged treasonable activities.

His legal team and supporters have repeatedly called for his release, citing concerns over his health and what they describe as the political nature of his detention.

The Southeast region has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent times, with armed groups targeting security personnel, government institutions, and civilians.

While IPOB has consistently denied involvement in these attacks, the government has accused the group and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of being responsible.
