A 13-year-old pupil, Samuel Sunday, has been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly carrying his father’s gun and threatening to shoot fellow students at St. Paul Primary School, Ikot Ibiok, in the Eket Local Government Area.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, confirmed the arrest during a briefing on February 5, 2025.
According to CP Azare, the incident occurred on January 28, 2025, when Samuel was seen armed with a locally made pistol while at school. The pupil reportedly threatened to open fire on his classmate
Following the police report, officers quickly responded and arrested Samuel, recovering the gun. During questioning, Samuel confessed to having kept the weapon since November 2024, which he had found in his father’s wardrobe.
The police also arrested Samuel’s father, whose identity has not been disclosed. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
In another development, CP Azare disclosed that the police had also arrested one Abasifreke Udo Thomas, alias Udo Orlando or Olamide, who was wanted for allegedly shooting a woman in December 2024.
The suspect, who had been hiding in a hotel, was apprehended, and a locally made pistol was recovered.
Moreover, on January 30, 2025, police operatives arrested three suspects—Uyobong Ekong Edet (24), Israel Daniel Bassey (19), and Nsikak Asuquo Okon (18)—for attempted murder, cultism, and unlawful possession of firearms.
The police recovered a locally made pistol, three live cartridges, machetes, a bottle of concoction they claimed was bullet-resistant, and wraps of suspected Indian hemp, alongside a cash sum of N371,550.
