…Says He Has Many Reasons to Thank God at Sixty

The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed pride in the leadership of his successor, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, commending him for his commitment to the state’s development.

Fayemi made this known on Sunday during a thanksgiving Mass held at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Isan-Ekiti, to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Speaking at the event, Fayemi highlighted his cordial relationship with Governor Oyebanji, describing it as one built on mutual love, respect, and a shared vision for Ekiti’s progress.

He praised the governor’s inclusive leadership style, which he said has fostered stability and unity across the state.

“I also want to thank our Governor for making me proud. It could have been otherwise; things could have gone awry. But he is also a product of grace, and that is why, despite the travails of politics, we maintain a strong relationship. All the rumors on social media are merely for entertainment,” Fayemi stated.

He emphasized that Oyebanji has upheld the vision of the state’s founding fathers by ensuring governance remains above political divisions. According to him, Ekiti remains one united entity, regardless of party affiliations.

“Many will wonder why Governor Segun Oni is here. When he celebrated his birthday, I spent the entire day with him.

Governor Fayose would have been here too if he was around. That is the Ekiti spirit—we may belong to different political parties, but we all belong to the ‘Ekiti Progressive Party.’ Our Governor is carrying on with that vision,” he added.

Reflecting on his milestone age, Fayemi said turning 60 is a moment of gratitude and renewed dedication to service.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Ekiti State and Nigeria at large.

In his remarks, Governor Oyebanji described Fayemi as a visionary leader whose contributions to the state remain remarkable.

He noted that the former governor’s tenure brought transformative changes that have left a lasting impact.

“We are immensely proud of your achievements. It has been sixty years of progressive impact, dedicated to service and excellence,” Oyebanji said.

“Thank you for your support and for guiding me. Thank you for all you have done for Ekiti people and your mentees worldwide. We remain deeply indebted to you.”

Delivering a homily titled Awareness of God’s Goodness, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, described Fayemi as a unique leader devoted to service, integrity, and justice.

He noted that these virtues have been the foundation of Fayemi’s leadership and personal life.

The event was graced by notable figures, including the first civilian Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo; former Governor Segun Oni; Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye; wife of the Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji; Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, and several other dignitaries.
