The Lagos State Government has announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion for the upcoming Lagos City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known in a statement on Tuesday, February 11, noting that the marathon will take place between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
He explained that the race will begin at the National Stadium in Surulere and follow a designated route through key areas of the city before concluding at Eko Atlantic.
To ensure safety and smooth movement during the event, major roads, junctions, and intersections along the race route will be barricaded, with security and traffic management officials stationed at strategic points.
Agencies involved include the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Neighbourhood Corps (LSNC), and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease congestion, the state government has provided alternative routes:

From Badagry/Mile 2: Pass through Apapa via Orile, link Eko Bridge, and continue through Outer Marina.
From Surulere: Access the island via Iponri/Iganmu, linking Eko Bridge to Outer Marina.
From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Mowe and environs): Take the Ojota Slip Road, connect Ikorodu Road, and continue through Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge.
From Okota: Use Mile 2/Orile, connecting to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
From Sango-Otta: Pass through Mushin, link Funsho Williams Avenue, and proceed to Eko Bridge.
From Epe-Lekki Expressway (Ajah and environs): Use Marwa Junction, connect Admiralty Way, and cross the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.

Additionally, while the Third Mainland Bridge will be closed to traffic heading towards Lagos Island, it will remain open for motorists traveling to the Mainland.
Osiyemi reassured Lagosians that traffic management personnel would be on the ground to minimize disruptions and urged commuters to plan their trips accordingly.
He also called for patience, emphasizing that the temporary road closures are essential to the successful hosting of the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
