Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has voiced his concerns about the club’s alarming position in the Premier League, warning that a shock relegation to the Championship is becoming a possibility.
Ferdinand’s comments came after United’s latest setback, a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where James Maddison’s goal condemned the Red Devils to their 12th league loss of the season.
The result leaves United languishing in 15th place with just 29 points from 25 matches—only two spots above the relegation zone.
During his podcast on YouTube, the former centre-back admitted that United’s situation is dire, stressing that the club is uncomfortably close to the drop zone.
“Manchester United are absolutely struggling at the moment. Only Wolves and West Ham separate my club from the relegation places. Do you realise we’re that close?” Ferdinand lamented.
He also pointed out the difficult run of fixtures ahead, highlighting games against top teams like Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Chelsea.
“Someone said we need 11 points just to stay up, and I’m starting to think like that. I’ve got the fixture list here, and I’m looking at the games, and I’m being serious. Normally, you look at the fixture list and see where the points are coming from, but I don’t see outright wins.”
The Red Devils have struggled since the arrival of manager Ruben Amorim in November 2024, with eight of their 12 league defeats coming under his leadership
Despite the bleak outlook, Ferdinand identified Leicester City as the only opponent where he believes United could secure a positive result, citing past victories against them this season.
“The only place I potentially see us getting anything – and I’m not even saying a win – is Leicester. We’ve slapped up Leicester a couple of times already this season, so we’ve got their number.”
With United sitting 31 points behind league leaders Liverpool, the pressure is mounting on the squad to turn their fortunes around and avoid an unthinkable relegation battle in the final stretch of the season.
