A police sergeant, Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela, has appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court for allegedly murdering his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, on Valentine’s Day.
Both the accused and the deceased were officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The tragic incident occurred on February 14, 2025, at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto.
According to reports, family members overheard the couple arguing over Jane’s absence from home the previous night. The confrontation escalated, and a gunshot was later heard.
Following the shooting, Mahlalela fled the scene with a minor child.
He remained on the run for four days before surrendering himself to Moroka SAPS on February 18, 2025. The child was later found at his aunt’s residence.
During his court appearance on February 20, the case was postponed to February 25 for a formal bail application hearing.
Meanwhile, authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
