The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis, 88, remains in critical condition as he battles kidney failure and a complex lung infection.

The pontiff, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for 11 days, marking the longest hospital stay of his papacy.

According to officials, recent blood tests indicate early signs of kidney failure, though doctors have assured that the condition is being monitored.

Pope Francis was admitted on February 14 with breathing difficulties, and while he has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday night, he continues to receive high-flow supplemental oxygen.

“The night passed well, the Pope slept and is resting,” the Vatican stated on Monday, offering a brief update on his condition. Despite his illness, Pope Francis remains mentally alert and was able to attend Mass on Sunday.

Medical reports indicate that while his platelet count remains low, it has stabilized.

Doctors emphasized the complexity of his health situation, stating that his prognosis remains uncertain as they await further responses to ongoing treatments.

From his hospital bed, Pope Francis expressed gratitude to medical staff and well-wishers worldwide. “I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment – and rest is also part of the therapy!” he stated.

In a social media message, he shared his appreciation for the many letters, prayers, and drawings he has received, particularly from children. “Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world,” he wrote.
