U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are progressing well, commending Russia’s role in the negotiations.
Trump made the remarks on Thursday night, February 27, during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House.
The discussions focused on diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Trump emphasizing that the negotiations were “very well advanced.”
However, he noted that a final agreement had not yet been reached.
“I think Russia has been acting very well. … I think we’re very well advanced on the deal, but we have not made a deal yet,” Trump stated, sitting alongside Starmer in the Oval Office.
Prime Minister Starmer urged the U.S. to provide a security backstop for any European forces that might take part in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, should a deal be finalized.
However, Trump remained reserved about the specifics of any future peacekeeping operations.
“I won’t reveal details of peacekeeping until a deal is agreed,” he added.
Trump also expressed confidence that a peace deal with Russia would hold, dismissing concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin would launch another invasion of Ukraine.
The remarks come as Trump continues to push for diplomatic resolutions to international conflicts, a key focus since assuming office last month.
However, the details and potential implications of the ongoing talks remain uncertain.
