President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, describing him as an extraordinary leader whose contributions have been instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s history and development.

In a statement released on Tuesday, President Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s decades of service to the nation, from his military career to his tenure as both military Head of State and civilian President.

Tinubu recalled how fate placed Obasanjo at the center of key moments in Nigeria’s history, including receiving the instrument of surrender from Biafran forces in 1970, effectively ending the Nigerian Civil War.

He also noted Obasanjo’s role in successfully transitioning Nigeria to civilian rule in 1979 and his return as an elected president in 1999, marking the beginning of the current democratic era.

“During both eras, General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

“As a leader, he consistently demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress.”

Beyond his time in office, Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s continued influence in national and global affairs, describing him as a key figure in peacekeeping and governance advocacy across Africa.

The president also recognized Obasanjo’s role as an outspoken voice in Nigerian politics, noting that while sometimes controversial, his interventions have shaped public policies and governance.

“At 88, the former president remains strong and active,” Tinubu added. “I pray that God Almighty grants him many more years so that Nigeria and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom.”

On behalf of the Nigerian government and citizens, Tinubu extended heartfelt congratulations to Obasanjo, celebrating his enduring legacy and statesmanship.

Happy 88th Birthday, President Obasanjo!
