A 58-year-old man, identified as Adeleye Olusegun Alani, has reportedly taken his own life by jumping into a well in the Ori-Osoko Community of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The tragic incident, according to the Ogun State Police Command, occurred on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development in a statement issued to the press.
According to the report, the deceased’s wife, Adetoyin Taiwo Adeleye, had raised an alarm after she could not find her husband upon returning home late in the evening.
A search around the compound led to the discovery of the man’s slippers beside the well, prompting fears about his whereabouts.
“The Ogun State Police Command regrets to report a tragic incident of suicide in Ori-Osoko Community, Olokuta, where a 58-year-old man, Adeleye Olusegun Alani, ended his life by jumping into a well,” Odutola said.
The incident was reported on March 12 by Adeleye Olukunle Olubunmi at the Kemta Divisional Police Headquarters after being alerted by the deceased’s wife.
Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene. The body was recovered from the well and has since been deposited at the morgue for further investigation.
Photographic evidence was also taken at the site to aid ongoing inquiries.
While sympathizing with the bereaved family, the police spokesperson encouraged residents to seek help in times of distress, emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional support.
“The Ogun State Police Command expresses its condolences to the bereaved family and urges community members to seek emotional and psychological support during difficult times,” the statement concluded
