Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attributed the growing insecurity in Northern Nigeria to widespread poverty, emphasizing the need for economic and educational reforms to address the crisis.

Obi made these remarks during a visit to the Muslim community in Awka, Anambra State, where he joined them in breaking the Ramadan fast.

He stressed that tackling poverty through youth empowerment and education would significantly reduce crime and instability in the region.

“The criminality you see in the North is because of poverty. We need to fix poverty and invest in education to tackle these issues,” Obi stated.

He further highlighted the importance of national unity, stating that Nigerians—regardless of religious or ethnic backgrounds—share common aspirations for peace, development, and economic progress.

As part of his ongoing support for the Muslim community, Obi pledged assistance in rebuilding a primary school within the mosque premises.

In response, Gidado Siddiki, National Deputy Director General of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), commended Obi for his consistent support.

He acknowledged Obi’s contributions to mosque renovations and sponsorship of community members for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

During the visit, Obi also distributed food items, including bottled water, fruits, and cooked meals, to the Muslim faithful, reinforcing his message of solidarity and goodwill during the holy month of Ramadan.
