Temitope Ajayi, a senior special assistant to President Bola Tinubu on media and publicity, has refuted claims that he called for the death penalty against an NYSC member who criticized the government.
The controversy began when Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, a corps member serving in Lagos, shared a viral video on Saturday condemning government policies.
In the video, she referred to Tinubu as a “terrible leader” and questioned the administration’s efforts in addressing economic challenges.
Her remarks sparked a heated debate online, with some supporting her stance while others argued that she had overstepped her role as a corps member.
Ajayi was among those who criticized Raye. In a Facebook post, he argued that as a serving corps member, she was bound by an oath and code of conduct that prevented her from making such statements.
“The issue is not about free speech,” Ajayi wrote. “If she were not a corps member, she could say whatever she wants. But as a corper, she violated her oath and code of conduct. That is capital punishment under NYSC.”
He added that Raye should be punished to the full extent of NYSC rules, stating, “She chose to be silly, then she should face the consequences.”
However, Ajayi’s use of the term “capital punishment” triggered backlash, with many interpreting it as a call for the death penalty.
In response to the criticism, Ajayi issued a statement on Monday clarifying his remarks. He insisted that his words were misinterpreted, emphasizing that the maximum penalty under NYSC rules is expulsion, not the death penalty.
“It is trite to say the maximum punishment under the NYSC protocol is expulsion; nothing beyond the established norms and laws is suggested or remotely implied,” he said.
Ajayi also highlighted the importance of discipline within the NYSC, describing it as a “historic and treasured national programme that should not be sullied and ridiculed by indiscipline.”
He urged Nigerians to uphold values of dignity, discipline, and mutual respect while engaging in national discussions.
