The Oyo State Government has officially withdrawn all charges filed against Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, founder of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
The individuals had been previously arraigned over their alleged involvement in the tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair event in December 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left several others injured.
At the court session held on Thursday, the defendants appeared visibly relieved, exchanging smiles and pleasantries following the court’s decision to strike out the charges.
Confirming the development, Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, explained that while the state initially took legal steps in response to the incident, the decision to discontinue the trial was made in the broader interest of justice.
“It was an unfortunate incident that led to the death of many,” Aikomo said.
“And you see, in law, whenever death occurs and the circumstances are not natural, the law will take its course. So the state responded by filing charges against the persons implicated in the investigation.”
He further noted that although the state had been prepared to prosecute the case, the defendants showed empathy and compassion to the affected families—factors that influenced the government’s decision to discontinue the legal proceedings.
“The purpose of prosecution is not to persecute people, but to serve justice,” Aikomo added.
“Having considered the conduct of the individuals involved and the prevailing circumstances, we felt it was appropriate to withdraw the charges.”
The case, which had attracted significant public attention, saw the defendants spend a brief period in custody before being granted bail.
With Thursday’s development, all legal proceedings against them have now been formally terminated.
