President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the National Assembly for its swift and patriotic approval of the emergency rule declaration in Rivers State, describing the move as crucial to restoring order and protecting national interests amid prolonged political unrest in the state.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the leadership of the legislature, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, for placing the welfare and security of Rivers people above partisan considerations.
“The National Assembly has demonstrated uncommon dedication by ratifying this emergency measure without delay. Their diligent assessment of sensitive security briefings highlights the urgency of this intervention,” Tinubu said.
He noted that the political crisis in Rivers, which has persisted for over 15 months, had threatened critical oil and gas infrastructure, disrupted governance, and posed a serious risk to the national economy.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” the President stated.
He stressed that the state of emergency is a necessary step to prevent further deterioration, safeguard livelihoods, and restore democratic accountability.
According to him, the six-month emergency rule will empower the newly-appointed Sole Administrator to restore order, initiate reconciliation processes, and fix institutional lapses in the state’s governance.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to collaborate closely with the National Assembly to promote national peace, economic stability, and inclusive development.
“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of our leaders. We remain committed to building a safer, more prosperous Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” he added.
